Imagine a place, a safe space where you could ask all the questions you’ve ever had on sexuality, sexual rights, reproductive health and that confusing thing your friend once said…without any fear, embarrassment or anyone judging you. That place would be brilliant, wouldn’t it?
Well that space exists! The SAfAIDS YPLA launched the Focus Fridays public forum in September 2017. The Focus Fridays are a monthly public forum which promotes positive dialogues among young people, scholars, researchers, parents, guardians, school authorities and other relevant stakeholders on key sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), HIV and gender issues being faced by young people.
Participants from the YPLA September Focus Friday session
The pilot Focus Friday session was held under the theme ‘Love, Sexual Rights and Young People: Making the Right Choices’, and focused on young people understanding their SRHR and negative outcomes of bad decisions, managing relationships and finding balance. The session hosted 20 students and young people from universities, colleges and Civil Society Organisations. The Focus Friday September session witnessed representation from the Women’s University in Africa (WUA) Students’ Representative Council, Zimbabwe Medical Students Association Subcommittee on SRH, Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Boarders) Adolescent Volunteers, The Suburban and individuals.
The next Focus Friady Session will be on 27 October, and will be streamed live on Facebook. Like the pages Young People’s Leadership Academy- YPLA and SAfAIDS, and join us for an exciting dialogue for young people led by young people!
